The Battle

This Story: Season 1 Episode 9 (production code 110)
TNG Overall: Episode 9
Trek Overall: Story 109, Episode 111
Airdate: 16 Nov 1987
Written by Larry Forrester & Herbert Wright
Directed by Rob Bowman

Notes

  • The first return of the Ferengi since “The Last Outpost“.
  • The bridge of the Stargazer was a redress of the battle bridge from “Encounter at Farpoint” which itself of the bridge from the TOS era movies, using a handful of props from the movies, too.
  • The plot with Damon Bok was revisited in the season 7 episode “Bloodlines“.
  • The Stargazer itself was supposed to be the model of the movie Enterprise, just renamed to something else, but it was decided late in production to make it look like the model of a ship seen in Picard’s quarters in Farpoint.
  • This episode establishes that headaches and the common cold had been cured by this time in Star Trek’s version of human history.
  • There’s a hilarious blooper from this episode with Brent Spiner (as Data) doing a Jimmy Stewart impression – “Mary, they built this thing in Bedford Falls!”
  • The tweets for these episodes say Episode 8, but they’re really Episode 9 – I forgot to update that number when I tweeted them out.

The Ferengi return, and are more of a threat than the silly version we saw first. One of them shows up and "gives" Picard a gift - his old command - the USS Stargazer. Of course people don't trust them, but we pic.twitter.com/szJl63KU1B

get a big glance into Picard's backstory, and seeing the old movie Enterprise bridge set again was cool. The Ferengi here wasn't bad either - way more slimy and threatening as Bok is out for revenge. Great ep. pic.twitter.com/tfb4ChqWMG
