Notes

• The first appearance of Tim Russ in Star Trek, although not as the Tuvok, his most famous character.
• Two costumes worn here by the would be thieves were worn later by a race called the Serbians in the Voyager episode “Revulsion“.
• It appears that Picard gave Tim Russ’ character a Vulcan nerve pinch.  While Spock stated it is possible for a human to do that, it’s never been seen before.  Theory is that Picard’s mind meld with Sarek left him with the ability to do that.
• The “toxic waste” here is named as Trilithum, explained here as a “byproduct of the ship’s engines”. In “Star Trek: Generations” it’s explained as something way more powerful.  It was also used in a bomb the Dominion used when they attempted to destroy the Bajoran sun in DS9’s “By Inferno’s Light“.
• The only time the race called the Sheliak are mentioned outside the one episode they appeared in – “The Ensigns of Command“.
