The Nagus

This Story: Season 1 Episode 11 (production code 411)
DS9 Overall: Episode 11
Trek Overall: Story 279, Episode 291
Airdate: 22 Mar 1993
Story by David Livingston
Teleplay by Ira Stephen Behr
Directed by David Livingston

Notes

  • The first episode with Wallace Shaun as Zek. Shaun is also known as Rex in the Toy Story franchise, Dr Sturgis in Young Sheldon, & of course Vizzini in Pricess Bride.
  • The first appearance of the “Rules of Acquisition” in Star Trek.
  • The music for this episode was composed by John Debney, who has done a lot of stuff, but for me is known for the music for the Doctor Who 1996 TV Movie.
  • The face on the Grand Nagus’ staff was designed to look like Armin Shimerman.
  • Several scenes in this episode were homages to “The Godfather”.
  • The only appearance to Zek’s son Krax.  He’s never mentioned again.
  • O’Brien returns in this episode.  In real life, Colm Meaney was off filming a movie.  He missed three episodes doing that.
  • O’Brien’s daughter Molly is said to be 3, which contradicts how much time has passed in real life since the episode aired that she was born in.
  • The only episode in the entire series where Morn opens his mouth (as he’s laughing).
  • In the scene where O’Brien is in his wife’s classroom, you can see an Ornithoid, which is a reference to the TOS episode “Catspaw“.
  • The first episode we see Sisko with a baseball glove (and a baseball).

#StarTrekMarathon #StarTrek Deep Space Nine Ep 11 - The Nagus - 22 Mar 1993 2/2 start of the relationship with Jake & Nog. But the main thrust is Ferengi culture, & the Nagus wanting Quark to take over. Fun story. This is the foundation of making the Ferengi not the disgrace they were early in TNG.
