Notes
- This is the second of six episodes that comprise a story arc about the war and the station being controlled by the Dominion/Dukat. While not an actual six part story, it is fairly tightly bound together and from the DS9 companion book, they were all created together, then the writers went off and wrote their episodes.
- According to Ronald D Moore, the idea from this episode came from a 1965 film “None But the Brave“.
- Dax was injured and stuck inside the ship due to a real life condition Terry Farrell has which is exasperated by direct sunlight exposure.
- The quarry this episode was filmed at in Sun Valley CA was the same one used for the episodes “The Homecoming“, “Indiscretion“, & “The Ship“. Shots with the ocean and the shoreline were digitally created.
- The temperature at the quarry peaked at 128 degrees F during filming, which caused major problems for actors and production. It also stopped a scripted scene had Worf rescuing the crew from a Klingon ship.
- Remata’Klan was played by Phil Morris. Morris has a wide range of Trek roles – going back to TOS as one of the children from the episode “Miri“. He was also a cadet in The Search for Spock, he was Thopok in DS9’s “Looking for Par’Mach in All the Wrong Places”, he was John Kelly in Voyager’s “One Small Step“. He also apparently was one of the actors that auditioned for Benjamin Sisko.
- The events from Empok Nor are referenced here – specifically with Nog & Garak.
- The first of two episodes for the Vorta Keevan. I believe that other than Weyoun, this is the only time a specific Vorta has appeared more than once. The other episode is “The Magnificent Ferengi“.

#StarTrekMarathon Deep Space Nine Ep 126 - Rocks and Shoals - 6 Oct 1997 2/2 glorious". The other plot involves Kira on the station having problems working side by side with the Dominion. It's a good character dev ep for her. Overall, this ep is more quiet than others in the arc, but well acted.
