Living Witness

This Story: Season 4 Episode 23 (production code 191)
VOY Overall: Episode 91
Trek Overall: Story 516, Episode 546
Airdate: 29 Apr 1998
Story by Brannon Braga
Teleplay by Bryan Fuller, Brannon Braga, & Joe Menosky
Directed by Tim Russ

Notes

  • Running fired torpedo count: 23 / Confirmed crew deaths since pilot: 18 (3 this ep, sorta – crew of 143 (my count says 135)). The Doctor relays that three crew members died in the Kyrian attack, but these are not seen.
  • This episode was directed by Tim Russ, who normally plays Tuvok.  It is his only time directing a Star Trek episode.
  • The museum in this episode was later re-used as a “body shop” set in Star Trek: Insurrection.  I spotted it instantly on first viewing of Insurrection.  The stairwell portion just jumps out to me.
  • Three different versions of the Doctor appear in this episode, and none of them are the one that is “our” Doctor on Voyager.
  • When it was announced that Robert Picardo was going to be a cast member in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, there was some discussion it would be THIS version of the Doctor (from Living Witness), given it was from a future time, but that was not the case.  SFA’s “Doctor” is “the” Doctor that was on Voyager for seven years.
  • B’Elanna is not in this episode, as Roxann Dawson was still out on maternity leave.
  • In the alternate sickbay on Voyager there is a large glass chamber here.  That physical prop was later re-used as the agony booth in Enterprise’s “In a Mirror, Darkly“, which itself was re-creation of the same thing from TOS’s “Mirror, Mirror“.
  • The first time we see a Kazon since the first episode of Season 3, albeit a hologram.
  • The only episode of this generation of Trek (TNG, DS9, VOY) not to include any scenes set in the 24th century.  The actual time this episode takes place is unclear (700ish years in the future of Voyager) but it’s a significant amount of time in the future.  Additionally, none of the “regular characters” appear.  The Voyager main cast are here only as holograms.
  • The only episode where a backup copy of the Doctor is available. This seems to contract several prior episodes which claimed that if the Doctor was lost during those episodes, he would be “lost” lost.
  • Henry Woronicz plays Quarren here.  He was also the Klingon J’Dan in TNG’s “The Drumhead” and Gegen in Voyager’s “Distant Origin“.
  • Rod Arrants plays Daleth here.  He was also Rex in the TNG episode “Manhunt“.
  • Craig Nelson (not that one) plays a Vaskan arbiter here.  He was also Krag in the TNG episode “A Matter of Perspective“.
  • Morgan Margolis plays a Vaskan spectator here.  He was also Baird in the Enterprise episode “Vanishing Point“.
  • One of the rare episodes after “Scorpion, Part II” where we see Seven of Nine in a full Borg outfit.

#StarTrekMarathon #StarTrek Voyager Ep 91 - Living Witness - 29 Apr 1998 1/2 One of my favs. The Doctor "wakes up" 700ish years in the future in a museum with a Voyager exhibit. However, they got it all wrong (the Warship Voyager). The Doctor spends most of his time trying to correct the record of

#StarTrekMarathon #StarTrek Voyager Ep 91 - Living Witness - 29 Apr 1998 2/2 what really happened. This is the closest we got to a mirror universe ep on Voyager. The changes of course cause a problem with established dogma, leading to a civil war of sorts. This (backup) Doctor leaves to find Earth.

The Kyrian museum in this episode …..
…. and as it appeared in Star Trek: Insurrection.
My prior physical copies of Star Trek: Voyager looked this way.
