The Augments

This Story: Season 4 Episode 6 (production code 182)
ENT Overall: Episode 82
Trek Overall: Story 671, Episode 710
Airdate: 12 Nov 2004
Written by Michael Sussman
Directed by LeVar Burton

Notes

  • The final of the three part Arik Soong arc.  They’re technically not a three part story, but are fairly strongly tied together.
  • Brent Spiner’s final appearance in the series.  He will however have a (new) voice over cameo as Data in the series finale.
  • The eighth of nine episodes directed by TNG’s LeVar Burton.  Burton does not appear on screen, but he did direct his old TNG castmate Brent Spiner.  The last time Burton directed Spiner was the TNG episode “The Pegasus“, some 11 years prior.
  • The Briar Patch is mentioned here by Arik Soong (in Klingon, no less – “Klach D’kel Brakt”), a reference to Star Trek: Insurrection.  That movie of course had both Brent Spiner & LeVar Burton in it.  The Klingon phrase was used before in the DS9 episode “Blood Oath“.
  • The end of the episode has dialogue that hints at the creation of Data (and his “family”) by Arik’s grandson Noonian Soong.
  • Additionally there is a reference to the SS Botany Bay and Khan referencing both “Space Seed” and “Wrath of Khan“.

#StarTrekMarathon #StarTrek Enterprise Episode 82 - The Augments - 12 Nov 2004The conclusion to the Soong/Augment trilogy. Of course our guys win out in the end, that was expected. I VERY much enjoyed Brent Spiner in these three eps. His augments, not so much. The leader here felt like Temu Khan,

but without any of the personality that Montalban did. Archer's escape from the cliffhanger was quite cool, tho. Probably the weakest of the three - as most of it was spent on Temu Khan's power grab. There's echos of the end of Wrath of Khan for sure, but it comes off as a weak ending. Oh well.
