Time and the Rani
Time and the Rani
This Story: Season 24, Story 1. Production Code 7D
Overall: Story 145, Episode 660-663
Airdates: 7 Sep 1987 – 28 Sep 1987
Written by Pip and Jake Baker
Directed by Andrew Morgan
Notes
- The first story for Sylvester McCoy as the Seventh Doctor.
- The last appearance of Kate O’Mara as the Rani unless you count the non canonical “Dimensions in Time“.
- Given Colin Baker’s refusal to return for a single story in Season 24, he did not participate in the regeneration scene. The Sixth Doctor was briefly played by Sylvester McCoy wearing a wig.
- For the tweets for episodes 1 and 2, I incorrectly listed them as a “two parter” (with 1/2 & 2/2). Still not back on track with 4 parters after having 2 parters and a 14 parter for the last two series before this. :)

..and then there's this. Probably the single worst "first story" for any Doctor. The regeneration is its own issue. Conceptually, the core story isn't that bad, but the entire thing pic.twitter.com/jjrkIEme0J

is just a muddled mess, albeit with a few highlights. I do like they didn't try to make Colin's coat fit Syl by making it smaller. And how do Mel's white pants not get dirty at all? pic.twitter.com/EudqOwyjmD

I did enjoy the scene when Mel & the Doctor finally meet and they're realizing each other is who they say they are. One of the best moments. Thing I remember most about this story pic.twitter.com/4pUzc4sjAz

was my importing of a PAL VHS tape of it from UK in 87, converting to NTSC, taking it to a #DoctorWho fan club meeting & surprising everyone with a new story to watch that day. That was fun. pic.twitter.com/9xjmoo5qWK

Lots of running around here. This is the slow part of a fairly crappy story doesn't have a ton going for it. They must have been proud of the "person dies in the explody ball" pic.twitter.com/yWjQKoVkFi

thing as they use it in this ep as well. The Doctor didn't spend much time with post regenerative issues - he's pretty much himself by now. The Doctor ends up in the Rani's device. pic.twitter.com/6bBS44yCJT

The Doctor defeats the Rani in a bit of a silly fashion which fits with 7. The thing that irked me about the end is we never got a scene of consequence in the Rani's Tardis. With pic.twitter.com/UZZC38ChAs

her Tardis being so much cooler in her last story, I wanted to see more of that. Kate O'Mara goes a bit OTT with acting here. Mel being a "computer expert" is referenced here. pic.twitter.com/zPPqwNhKA2
