- The first time we hear of the Cardassian “Obsidian Order”. It was originally going to be called the Grey Order, but the name was changed due to a similar name on Babylon 5.
- The first episode for the Cardassian character of Enabran Tain – an important character in later series.
- The first (and only time) we ever get to hear Bashir’s full name – “Julian Subatoi Bashir”.
- The first time the Cardassian homeworld is named – “Cardassia Prime”.
- The first Deep Space Nine episode to be directed by a woman.
- Reference to McCoy here when Bashir says “I’m a Doctor not a botanist”.
- The famed Garak line “…especially the lies.” comes from this episode.
