This Story: Season 5 Episode 10 (production code 204)
VOY Overall: Episode 104
Trek Overall: Story 530, Episode 560
Airdate: 16 Dec 1998
Written by Michael Taylor
Directed by Les Landau

Notes

  • Running fired torpedo count: 43 (two this episode) / Confirmed crew deaths since pilot: 19 (crew of 140 (my count says 134) – but is 127?).
  • A working title for this episode was “Refugee”.
  • It is established that Vorik (who appears again) and Tuvok are the only Vulcans on Voyager.
  • The Forest of Forever appears again after last having been seen in “Once Upon a Time“.
  • The events of this episode are recalled in the Star Trek Prodigy episode “Supernova Part I“.
  • The final time we see a live action Betazoid in any incarnation of Star Trek that is not Deanna Troi.
  • Kir is played here by Randy Oglesby.  He’s also well known for playing Degra in ten episode of Star Trek Enterprise’s third season – the Xindi arc.  He was also the scholar/artist in Riva’s chorus in TNG’s “Loud as a Whisper“, Ah-Kel & Ro-Kel in DS9’s “Vortex“, Silaran Prin in DS9’s “The Darkness and the Light“, and Trena’L in Enterprise’s “Unexpected“.
  • Oglesby was also in one of my favorite movies of all time – 1996’s “Independence Day” where he played one of the guys at a bar who taunted Randy Quaid’s character (“they did things to him… sexually”). Oglesby was also a super minor character in a TV movie that I adored, but not it’s well loved (or known these days) – “Project Alf“.
  • Prax was played here by J Patrick McCormack.  He was also Admiral Bennett in DS9’s “Doctor Bashir, I Presume” and an unnamed Romulan Commander in Star Trek Nemesis.
  • Patrick Barnitt plays a character called “Brenari” here.  In all he plays over 20 different background characters on DS9, VOY, ENT, and a few of the movies produced around this time.  I’m not going to list them all here, but there’s a list with pictures on the Memory Alpha blog entry for Barnitt here.
  • The last episode of Voyager to air in 1998.

#StarTrekMarathon #StarTrek Voyager Ep 104 - Counterpoint - 16 Dec 1998 1/2 Two plots here. Voyager transports telepaths through a region of space that defines that as being illegal. The other is Janeway has a romance with one of the people doing the policing - a man named Kashyk (not a Wookie).

#StarTrekMarathon #StarTrek Voyager Ep 104 - Counterpoint - 16 Dec 1999 2/2 This was a good performance by Mulgrew. Was about time they did something like this for Janeway. I found this stuff more interesting than the telepath story. Although the latter did have a few fun moments. Overall an ok ep.

My prior physical copies of Star Trek: Voyager looked this way.
