Back in the Red

This Story: Season 8, Episodes 1-3
Overall: Story 44, Episodes 45-47
Airdate: 18 Feb – 4 Mar 1999
Written by Doug Naylor
Directed by Ed Bye

Notes

  • The first and only three parter in the show history.
  • Chris Barrie returns as a series regular, although Rimmer here is not a hologram, but living due to change in show format.
  • Additional series changes including the return of Red Dwarf and Holly (as Norman Lovett)
  • The original Red Dwarf crew is also now alive, so this is something the show never had to deal with before, the full crew of the Dwarf (beyond flashbacks), not just our crew.
  • Three actors from the original series of Red Dwarf return here too – Mac McDonald (Cast Hollister), Paul Bradley (Chen), & David Gillespie (Selby). Mark Williams was unavailable to revive his character of Peterson.
  • The Cat dance routine in Part 3 was choreographed by Charles Augins who played Queeg in the series 2 episode of the same name.
  • The Red Dwarf model in Series 8 is the same one that was used in the “Remastered” Series 1-3 version, which was longer.  It was explained on screen by saying the nanobots restored Red Dwarf to what it was like when it was originally designed, and not part of budget cuts which resulted in the ship model we knew for the first five series.

#RedDwarfMarathon Ep 45 - Back in the Red Pt 1 - 18 Feb 1999 1/2 S8 starts with another radical change in format. Due to events of last series' ending, we now have Red Dwarf back, but with all the crew, something the show's never done before. Rimmer's back, but as a human, not a

#RedDwarfMarathon Ep 45 - Back in the Red Pt 1 - 18 Feb 1999 2/2 hologram. Getting adjusted to all that is I ADORE S8 because it brings back the bunk chat scenes the first two series had. This is one of my fav series of Red Dwarf, an opinion not held by most. 1st of 3 parts.

Had to have a separate tweet about the rat joke at the start. Of everything I've ever found funny in Red Dwarf, I don't think I've laughed out loud as many times as this ever. Holly's punch line is perfect. pic.twitter.com/GUnECr7XdS

#RedDwarfMarathon Ep 46 - Back in the Red Pt 2 - 25 Feb 1999 1/2 Pt2 shows our crew trying to defend themselves with events of the last few seasons. They need to track down Kryten's nanos to prove their story. Funniest moment for me was when Kochanski gets horny for Lister in

#RedDwarfMarathon Ep 46 - Back in the Red Pt 2 - 25 Feb 1999 2/2 an elevator. It sets up Rimmer's scene at the Captain's dinner with all the women doing the same. That joke was actually the main one this ep, and goes on just a tad too long, but is still funny. #DibbleyFamily

#RedDwarfMarathon Ep 47 - Back in the Red Pt 3 - 4 Mar 1999 1/2 The horny joke carries over here too with Kochanski going after Rimmer. The trial concludes with our crew being found guilty & sentenced to the Tank. Amusingly they were found innocent of the original charges, but

#RedDwarfMarathon Ep 47 - Back in the Red Pt 3 - 4 Mar 1999 2/2 guilty of something totally different. The Cat dance scene was a bit over the top and the stop motion was weird. Getting "real Rimmer" to join them was an odd choice. Thought it was a well paced out three parter.
