Second Chances

This Story: Season 6 Episode 24 (production code 250)
TNG Overall: Episode 150
Trek Overall: Story 244, Episode 252
Airdate: 24 May 1993
Story by Michael A. Medlock
Teleplay by René Echevarria
Directed by Winrich Kolbe

Notes

  • The first episode of Star Trek directed by LeVar Burton.  Burton directed one more TNG episode (“The Pegasus“), and then went on to direct 10 episodes of Deep Space Nine, 8 of Voyager, and 9 of Enterprise.
  • The events of this episode would be recalled in the DS9 episode “Defiant” (when Thomas Riker returns), and much later on in Star Trek: Lower Decks when Brad Boimler is duplicated in the same way in the Lower Decks episode “Kayshon, His Eyes Open“.
  • Mae Jamison is a guest star in this episode.  In real life she was an astronaut, the first one to actually appear on Star Trek.  On the set when filming this was Nichelle Nicholls, who was instrumental in Jamison becoming an astronaut in the first place.  Love that.
  • The purple dress worn by Marina Sirtis was later used by a background actress in the Star Trek Enterprise episode “Two Days and Two Nights“.
  • The events of the episode “The Icarus Factor” are briefly mentioned here.

#StarTrekMarathon #StarTrek TNG Ep 150 - Second Chances - 24 May 1993 1/2 That one where Riker is duplicated via the famed transporter accident. We end up with a second Riker who is mostly like "our" Riker, just less headstrong. At the end of the ep, he's allowed to live, and turns up again later

#StarTrekMarathon #StarTrek TNG Ep 150 - Second Chances - 24 May 1993 2/2 on DS9. Was an odd choice. I don't believe "Thomas" Riker was ever mentioned again on TNG. Amusing scenes with Troi getting amorous with the other Riker. It's an OK ep, not exactly bad, but the duplicate thing is "eh".
