The Highlanders

This Story: Season 4, Story 4. Production Code FF.
Overall: Story 31, Episodes 141-144
Airdates: 17 Dec 1966 – 7 Jan 1967
Written by Elwyn Jones & Gerry Davis. Directed by Hugh David.

Notes

  • There was a reconstruction made for the Highlanders, but on the website where they are all stored, they don’t have the actual episodes available, just extras connected to the reconstruction.  I’m not sure why – but I’m linking to the page where they should be anyway.

First of four eps of "The Highlanders". This story is totally missing save for a few minor clips, and is notable for being the first story with Second Doctor companion Jamie. It's pic.twitter.com/qjBnjtlf6S

also the last historical story until 1982. This story takes place after the real life Battle of Culloden. As per the norm, our crew emerges from the Tardis and are taken prisoner. pic.twitter.com/DUvYYu7COS

I think this is falling into the trap I had with The Crusade & The Massacre. The recon makes it super hard to follow, and the characters are all a blur. Hopefully that changes. pic.twitter.com/tC1Mo1zdxl

The Doctor & Ben are trapped w/other rebels and to be sold as slaves. The Doctor appears to switch sides abandoning his friends. Troughton's pretending to be others is amusing. pic.twitter.com/EFgo2qgEmE

This story is odd in that it has Jamie, but he's not a companion here - I keep trying to see him as one here. He gets a little screen time here - he's paired with Ben in this ep. pic.twitter.com/QZ58FxPrbi

The girls meet up with a still disguised Doctor at a bar. They plot to find and capture the boat with Ben and Jamie.

This episode was easier to follow than Ep1. Last ep of 1966. pic.twitter.com/8tYrmZbZ2Y

Ben escapes the boat and finds the Doctor, who is hiding as a solider. I wish I could have seen this ep, as Troughton's hiding as others seems like something I would have liked. pic.twitter.com/MJZBn3alfM

The Doctor tricks the sailors into being attacked by the Highlanders, rescuing Jamie. Our crew leaves w/Jamie who guides them to the Tardis. Again, the lack of a real ep hurt this. pic.twitter.com/JOpMFNblex

This woman reminds of the Hartnell era companion Katarina, but I know she isn’t.
