The Wheel in Space

This Story: Season 5, Story 7. Production Code SS
Overall: Story 43, Episodes 204-209
Airdates: 27 Apr 1968 to 1 Jun 1968
Written by David Whittaker.  Directed by Tristan De Vere Cole.

Notes

  • Episode 3 & 6 exist. 1, 2, 4, & 5 do not.  This story has not been fully animated.
  • There was a short 10 minute cut down animation done for Episode 1.  It is an extra on the Macra Terror animated release in 2019.  I will not be using the animated Episode 1 here, but I will include a couple of screenshots below.

1st of a six part Cyberman story, but nearly all of this ep is just the Doctor & Jamie exploring the space station they're on, never actually encountering anyone else at all. pic.twitter.com/zFR7WzOHZI

This story has a pretty bad reputation, I'll be curious to see what I think of it here with this proper run through. The Doctor & Jamie never meet any people in this episode. pic.twitter.com/9PalFB43Nc

Troughton is not in this ep (vacation), so when he returns in ep3, it'll be the first he runs into anyone other than Jamie. This ep is odd, as it mostly all focuses on the pic.twitter.com/D4BTcIQueL

staff of the "Wheel". I think this is the first ep where the Doctor is called "Dr. John Smith", a recurring gag through the show's run. We finally meet new companion Zoe. pic.twitter.com/ksCxbtpNeg

Troughton is back, and we have a real episode here. Jamie is caught trying to sabotage a weapon on the Wheel. Most of this ep is them trying to fix the laser. We do finally get pic.twitter.com/xfuqqtcdgA

some Cybermen in the story finally, but not in a huge role. Their voices are different here. Great line from the Doctor - "Logic merely allows one to be wrong with authority". pic.twitter.com/oY2QTQQ8R4

I do NOT like the voices of the Cybermen in this story - they're off. What makes it more annoying is the character in the first pic HAS the proper voice from before. Most of pic.twitter.com/9gowQ0PwLK

this ep is the Doctor trying to convince the Wheel staff of the danger of the Cybermen. The Cybermen are still mostly in the background. The recon has some self made animation. pic.twitter.com/O7MxTYuPDo

Almost done with recons. After this one, only 5 more total. The Cybermen just don't feel as threatening as some of the Cybermen stories of the past. There's so much in this ep pic.twitter.com/gCdgSGhZvB

that I don't understand the point of. Usually penultimate episodes build up the threat, but I don't feel any real pressure here or urgency to do anything. A weird feeling. pic.twitter.com/oqcH5L3Pb2

#DoctorWhoMarathon Ep 209 - The Wheel in Space 6/6 (Serial SS, Story 44) - 1 Jun 1968. #DoctorWho 1/3

Back to a real ep for the last of the story and Season 5 as well. The Cyberman threat is taken down easily, but that shouldn't be a surprise as they weren't much of a threat. pic.twitter.com/swdLrf5DXO

#DoctorWhoMarathon Ep 209 - The Wheel in Space 6/6 (Serial SS, Story 44) - 1 Jun 1968. #DoctorWho 2/3

My least fav Cyberman story to this point. Zoe joins the crew, but first the Doctor shows a "mind projection" of the Daleks, which was a real life rerun of "Evil of the Daleks". pic.twitter.com/CZPOKdcKwg

Fun Fact: The spacesuits worn by Jamie and Zoe, previously seen in The Tenth Planet, later were used as costumes in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. pic.twitter.com/3z7ehpdYcn
