Spearhead From Space

This Story: Season 7, Story 1. Production Code AAA
Overall: Story 51, Episodes 254-257
Airdates: 3 Jan 1970 to 24 Jan 1970
Written by Robert Holmes.  Directed by Derek Martinus

Notes

  • The first story made in color.  Also, due a strike at the time, the story was shot 100% on film – was the only one done this way.  As such, it’s the only classic Who story possible to be released in true HD (and not just regular stuff upscaled).
  • I believe, but am not sure of, this story is the first time the Doctor is referenced as having two hearts.

We have colour! Doctor Who moves into a new decade with a complete and total revamp. Nearly every aspect of the show feels different, despite this being made in 1969. #Shoes pic.twitter.com/uW7P0LJvfA

Given so much is new, it's hard to get a handle on what's going on here on its on 1st viewing. The Autons are introduced here, who were also used in Eccleston's first ep. pic.twitter.com/xGRL2SZ1hM

An early example of pop music in Who - "Oh Well" from Fleetwood Mac is in this episode. We start to get into the wider story with the meteorites and the Autons. The Doctor pic.twitter.com/hOosT3Vt1b

This is the first story we get the fun phrase of "dimensionally transcendental" to explain the Tardis being bigger on inside. We find out more of the plan by the Nestene pic.twitter.com/uPwEfQQxOE

consciousness. The Doctor tries and fails to get away in the Tardis. The Doctor & the Brig visit the plastics factory. As the ep ends, we still don't know the big bad plan. pic.twitter.com/KnzvKfJ55b

Last of the true HD episodes in Classic Who. ?

We start to get details on the Auto plan, which is to replicate government officials and take over. The Doctor & Liz snoop pic.twitter.com/ByLc0m53V6
