Planet of the Daleks

This Story: Series 10, Story 4. Production Code SSS
Overall: Story 68, Episodes 344-349
Airdates: 7 Apr 1973 to 12 May 1973
Written by Terry Nation
Directed by David Maloney

Notes

  • In 2019, this was released on Blu-Ray in the Season 10 box set.  Planet of the Daleks had updated special effects. I will be using that version for my watch/review.
  • This was the first Doctor Who story that Terry Nation had written since Daleks’ Master Plan in 1965.  As such, during the writing, Terry Nation came up with individual titles for the six episodes, as he was reportedly unaware that the show stopped doing that in the 8 years since then.  The six episode titles are said to be (in order): Destiny’s, Mission Survival, Pursed, Escape or Die, The Day Before Eternity, & Destiny.  Additionally, the working title for the story overall was Return of the Daleks.
  • I got the date wrong on Episode 4’s tweets. I said 21 of Apr (forgot to change ’em from ep3), which then made Episode 5 wrong, too. They should be 28 Apr (Ep 4) & 5 May (Ep 5). Can’t edit the tweets to fix it, though.

The second "half" of the Frontier story. They're connected by a plot point, but not really the same story. We don't see an actual Dalek until the end of the episode. Most of pic.twitter.com/vrmL1aKHWb

this one is Jo looking for help for the Doctor. There's a great scene when the Doctor talks to Thals about the original Dalek story from '63 & namedrops original Tardis crew. pic.twitter.com/LmDJ6oAOKa

The early part of this ep is still the same explorational feel that ep1 had. Jo passes out, but is saved by a native Spiridon before the ship she's on is blown up by Daleks. pic.twitter.com/Giw5E6tSFY

The Doctor spends most of this ep captured and thinking Jo has been killed. We meet another Thal who just arrived. She announces there's 10k Daleks on the planet. pic.twitter.com/ZkXflGQysZ

More Thals arrive on the planet. Jo continues to try and rescue the Doctor. Intersting how they saved $ on having the Spiridons wearing cloaks or were invisible. I didn't pic.twitter.com/H24olQddz8

realize until this viewing that a few of the Dalek props are in a shambly state, probably hanging around from early 60's still. Most of this ep is people hiding from Daleks. pic.twitter.com/Wo7mhfSgN9

Ep4 spends a lot of time (nearly 10m) with the resolution of the cliffhanger from Ep3. Jo finally meets up with the Doctor again for the first time since the start of Ep1. pic.twitter.com/MOQDJnii1b

All the parties meet up and start planning on destroying the Dalek army. Tension between the various Thals drives most of the conflict at this point. Cliffhanger is meh. pic.twitter.com/7jMD9cSTdm

After surviving the night, the "crew" dispose of a few Daleks in comedic fashion. Then they make it into the Dalek base to try to stop their bacteria bomb w/the help of one pic.twitter.com/Xx3WPDm4BF

of the Spiridons. The Daleks bacteria backfires, and traps two of them forever in a room. The cliffhanger is oddly paced - the Doctor is busted by a rather shouty Dalek. pic.twitter.com/DlTuIH2Cp2

I really enjoyed this - and I know a lot don't. As I started ep6, I didn't want to to be over. My biggest regret here is that it didn't mesh with Frontier in Space better. pic.twitter.com/PmfRJuBkNh

In the end, the Doctor sets off the bombs, and causes the Dalek army to be buried in ice, immobilizing them. Dalek Supreme looked a bit odd painted gold with a flashlight. pic.twitter.com/rGG7woWQyU

Flashlight Dalek!
The original effects version of the shot that is the thumbnail for this page at the top. This was one where new SFX really helped.
