- The Romulan commander was played by Mark Lenard who later went on to play Spock’s father Sarek in “Journey to Babel“, and the unnamed Klingon commander in Star Trek: The Motion Picture.
- This is the first on screen appearance of the Romulans as well as the concept of the cloaking device for starships.
- In 2022, the Strange New Worlds episode “A Quality of Mercy” proposes an alternate version of the events of this episode. It was most enjoyable.

Top 5 ep. Absolutely stellar. Kirk & crew investigate destroyed outposts to find out they've been attacked by a ship that's invisible. It's a badass story showing the two captains trying to outmaneuver each pic.twitter.com/ickqcCiZu1

other. Romulans introduced here. Their commander is played by Mark Lenard better known as Spock's father Sarek. The tension & characters are superbly realized here. Cannot say enough about how great this is. pic.twitter.com/wLRYAin6xQ
