The Slaver Weapon

This Story: Season 1 Episode 14 (production code 1.11)
TAS Overall: Episode 14
Trek Overall: Story 93, Episode 94
Airdate: 15 Dec 1973
Written by Larry Niven
Directed by Hal Sutherland

Notes

  • The first appearance of the Kzinti.
  • Wikipedia lists this release date as 8 Dec, but that is wrong, it is 15 Dec.
  • The Kzinti suits were pink for the same reason the tribbles were pink in their episode – Hal Sutherland, the director, was color blind.
  • I believe it’s the only episode of Star Trek (TOS/TAS/movies) that does not feature Kirk at all – or the Enterprise itself (outside of title sequence).
  • The death of the Kzinti in this story is the only time a race dies in Star Trek Animated.

The Kzinti enter the story, to the delight of @SeanFerrick. This is an odd one as it has no Kirk (or the Enterprise) at all, but yet works as one of the better TAS episodes. This ep introduces a race and pic.twitter.com/y9JvgfUtwO

gives them some background which isn't done a lot in these animated eps. Would love to see the Kzinti brought back and developed. Was a good story; well paced for 22 mins, tells the story of two races. pic.twitter.com/HsvoEPCiGX
