One Small Step

This Story: Season 6 Episode 8 (production code 228)
VOY Overall: Episode 128
Trek Overall: Story 552, Episode 584
Airdate: 17 Nov 1999
Story by Mike Wollaeger & Jessica Scott
Teleplay by Mike Wollaeger, Jessica Scott, Bryan Fuller, & Michael Taylor
Directed by Robert Picardo

Notes

  • Running fired torpedo count: 61 (one this episode).  This contradicts the hard limit set in “The Cloud” of 38.
  • In universe, this story takes place from 19-29 Oct, 2032.  As I type this on 5 May 2026, it’s only about 6.5 years into the future vs 33 years in the future when the episode originally aired.
  • John Kelly was played by Phil Morris.  Morris has a wide range of Trek roles – going back to TOS as one of the children from the episode “Miri“. He was also a cadet in The Search for Spock, he was Thopok in DS9’s “Looking for Par’Mach in All the Wrong Places”, and was Remata’Klan in DS9’s “Rocks and Shoals“.  He also apparently was one of the actors that auditioned for Benjamin Sisko.
  • Seven of Nine says that the New York Yankees win the World Series in 2032.   Additionally, a fictional baseball player created for Deep Space Nine is mentioned here – “Buck Bokai”.
  • They claim that Buck Bokai beat Joe Dimaggio’s record – which is consecutive games played with a hit.  Problem is they mentioned it was the World Series, and the record only counts regular season, not playoffs.
  • The only time the Andorians are mentioned in Voyager.
  • There is an apparent reference to Frank Herbert’s Dune, as the Doctor mentions a planet named Arrakis.
  • Apparently, much of Seven’s dialog was originally for Chakotay in earlier drafts of the script.

#StarTrekMarathon #StarTrek Voyager Ep 128 - One Small Step - 17 Nov 1999 2/2 off into a rescue attempt for the ship remains. It's a good "exploration" ep w/o aliens or space battles or anything like that. Good character development. Wish there were more episodes like this in Trek lore. Loved it.

My prior physical copies of Star Trek: Voyager looked this way.
