Mobil & Texaco Gas Stations
A couple of years ago I noticed that Shell Oil merged (or bought out, I forget which) Texaco. Over time, all the Texaco gas stations in this area became Shell stations. The Texaco gas card I had was replaced by a Shell card I was sent.
Then Mobil & Exxon merged, and became ExxonMobil Oil. This didn’t appear to affect any of the gas stations I noticed, all the Mobil stations I frequented were still Mobil stations. I’ve been a Mobil customer for ages, mostly because of their use of the Speedpass system where you don’t have to mess with paying for your gas, it’s charged to your credit card through Speedpass. Anyway, I’ve loved that system for a long time.
However, this week, I noticed that two of the Mobil stations in my area are now Texaco stations! This has the immediate upside of eliminating my Speedpass there. The thing that makes me wonder about this is Mobil & Texaco never had a relationship that I’m aware of before. Plus I don’t see why they’re Texaco stations, as I was under the impression all Texaco stations became Shell stations per the buyout/merger awhile back.
So why are these stations becoming Texaco stations? Did Shell/Texaco buy out some Mobil stations and decided to rebradn them Texaco? Or is this a case of a local owner in my area deciding to switch from Mobil to Texaco?
Does anyone have any information about this? Thanks.

I do not have an answer to your question, but I do have the same question. Since in the last couple of days I have notice that the stations that were Exxon Gas Stations are now Shell…
I had problems with my car and taking gas and it seems like the only gas it does not give a problem with is Exxon so What is going on? I can’t seem to find anything about it in the Internet about it until now. I still do not have the answer, if you happen to know can you please inform me please?
As with you, my Texaco card of 20 years was converted to a Shell card, and the small balance I had on the Texaco card became a Shell balance. I live in Utah, and all sorts of nice new Shell stations opened up last year. Then suddenly, about two weeks ago, those Shell stations have now become brand-spanking-new TEXACO stations — and they DO NOT ACCEPT Shell cards! I called Texaco Customer Service (1-800-TEXACO7) to apply or convert to a Texaco card, and they are no longer available. I asked, “Then what card are these brand new Texaco’s going to take?”. The answer, probably Chevron cards! Talk about frustrating!
I HAVE HAD A BUSINESS CHEVRON CARD, IN THE BUSINESS NAME OF CARLTON BUILDERS, SINCE 1083. NOW IT HAS TURNED TO CHEVRON/TEXACO…SO I STOPPED AT A TEXACO STATION, GASED MY VEHICLE, PRESENTED MY CHEVRON/TEXACO CARD AND WAS REFUSED. THE CLERK INDICATED I NOW NEED A SHELL/TEXACO AND/OR VICE VERSA….
SO, NOW I WANT TO KNOW, W/A A REPLY FROM SHELL TO MY EMAIL ADDRESS PLEASE, WHY AND WHERE IS MY SHELL/TEXACO CARD…CHEVRON INDICATED I SHOULD HAVE HAD MY SHELL SENT TO ME WHEN THEY AUTOMATICALLY UPDATED MY CHEVRON TO CHEVRON/TEXACO, AND DID MY EXXON TO NOW EXXON/MOBIL…SO, SHELL, YOU ARE MISSING OUT ON ALOT OF BUSINESS…PLEASE REPLY AND I WILL GIVE YOU THE ADDRESS WHERE TO SEND MY CARDS, IF NO REPLY I WILL ASSUME YOU DONT NEED THE BUSINESS MY COMPANY CAN AND WOULD GIVE YOU….THANK YOU,’
CARLTON BUILDERS…
I too had a Texaco card for many years, then it was converted to Shell. After much hassle and to my surprise CitiBank took over Shell. The Citi-bankCard became a MasterCrad , which I didn’t use for 6mos, only to find the card was canceled????
Now, as others note, many of the Shell stations are becoming TEXACO.
While in Tillamook, Or. this weekend, and needing gas I found a small city of 10,000 had only 2 Shell and one Texaco stations .Now having neither valid card, I made it back to Portland, and purchased gas with an ARCO.
What is with all these giant merges????
Leaving the little guy wondering what card is good or ???? Find a 76 or Arco. YOUR Loses’
Here in my part of the country, There were lots of Texaco stations and they accepted Shell and Texaco cards. Most of the Texacos are now Shell. I was told that Shell was marketing Texaco gas here but the parent company sold Texaco to Chevron. Now the Texaco name is coming back around town but with Chevron gas. Yes even though the pump says Texaco, I was told that at the NEW Texaco the gas is the same as Chevron.
Also now the gas at Phillips 66, Conoco and 76 stations, the gas is the same callled Pro Clean.
I would bet it is a money making/saving event and not about customer satisfaction. Putting the question to your investment broker would shed light on the subject. It is very interesting in deed to read about these happenings at this time. Thank you.
Just stopped at a local “Texaco” station and the machine refused my card. It had been a “Texaco” card and then it was changed into a “Shell” card last year. I was informed that it would work where ever my “Texaco” card worked. I went inside to asking about it and was told I’d need a “Cheveron Texaco” card and they don’t take Shell Texaco cards. Certainly it is not a convience to the customer.
it’s complicated (as i comment on a terribly old post). anyway, for those that stumble upon this page as i did…
chevron bought texaco in 2001, but had to give up the brand naming rights to royal dutch shell for a period of 3 years. that is why you saw shell/texaco for a few years. this is when shell started converting a bunch of stations based on location, market, etc. the rights reverted back to chevron in 2004, which is why your shell/texaco cards stopped working.
the other notable petroleum company merger is BPAmoco.
just resent was on vacation, tried to use my chervon/texaco card at a texaco station was informed that shell bought out texaco and our card would not work, called my card and the company denied that shell bought them out so where and who to use this card.

I to date have just recieved a texaco card and for the life of me could not find a texaco station in my area. I called handfulls of texaco stations that I found to be now out of bussiness. When I called the 1800 number for texaco they told me I couldnt use my card in my state … Why did they send me this card?
I live in McMinnville, Oregon, This is confusing, The Texaco station here has been converted to Mobil this last week. No notification, and probably wont take Texaco or Chevron Cards.
