How close are you to work?

Saw something on another blog I read, and it’s a query as to how far away you are from work. Using the really badass new mapping system from Google, I live 7.6 miles from where I work (although if I reverse the directions, it gives me a completely different route that’s 8.7 miles).
In November of 2002, my company moved headquarters to where we are now. Before that, I lived exactly 5 miles from where I worked. What’s interesting is that my wife and I bought our house in Feb of 2002. Before that, I was even closer, I lived 1.8 miles from work. When I moved here originally from Philadelphia, I wanted to live really close to work (hence my under 2 mile choice with NO highways). My job back home in Philadelphia took me about 35 miles one direction over two really horrible routes (The Sure-Kill Expressway and Rt 202 if you know Philly roads).

Curious to know how far you are from work – leave a comment in my comments section, or track back to me from your own blog.

    Hi Joe,
I live 4.4 miles from work. This took a few years to get it that way (not by moving, but by switching jobs). I go home for lunch each day.
I’ve had long commutes though. Longest regular commute was 75 miles one way. Those were the days.

I live EXACTALLY 1 tenth of a mile closer than you. Neener Neener… :)

I’m currently about 25 miles from work. Mostly highway, about 30-45 minutes one-way. I’ve been there about 15 months. If I make it 2 years and things still look good, I may consider moving closer.

Sheesh, I can’t even see why you’d even blog about this one if you’re so close to your job. I trudge 25 miles each way through a truly horrid Atlanta rush hour. But it’s not the mileage that bothers me – it’s the congestion along the way. If there are no wrecks or congestion along the way, I MIGHT be able to pull it off in 40 minutes. The worst case scenario (such as roadwork, gas leaks or multiple accidents) can easily push the transit to over 90 minutes.
But I try to look on the bright side, since it’s pretty much a given if I choose to work in Atlanta. My transit time gives me the perfect opportunity to listen to an entire album or review yet another Sabbath live recording. Audio books are also a nice diversion :)

Hi Joe, i´m currently around 50 or 60 miles from work, i used to be closer to my other office, but since last october i´ve been moved to another city, and my wife couldnt move right away (because of my new born baby) so right now i have to drive all the way back home every day (i listen to a lot of music in my car that´s the upside); by the way i live in Mexico and the 2 cities i´m talking about are Queretaro and Celaya.
    Greetings
