Only The Good…
This Story: Season 8, Episode 8
Overall: Story 48 Episode 52
Airdate: 5 Apr 1999 (UK), 7 Mar 1999 (US)
Written by Doug Naylor
Directed by Ed Bye
Notes
- This is the last episode in what’s considered the “classic” era for Red Dwarf. It would take nearly another 10 years to get another episode, and when the series returned, it was no longer on BBC2.
- This is the last regular episode for both Norman Lovett as Holly and Chloe Annett as Kochanski. While both will re-appear in future episodes, they’re cameos.
- British comedian Tony Slattery voices the vending machine in this episode. He was previously in the episode “Kryten” from Series 2 playing one of the Androids on the “Androids” TV show Kryten was watching.
- British actor David Verrey here plays a character called “Big Meat” (one of the prisoners). He also appeared in two 2005 episodes of Doctor Who (Aliens of London & World War III) as a character called “Joseph Green”
- This is the last episode of Red Dwarf directed by anyone else other than Doug Naylor (OG director Ed Bye directed this). From the next episode forward (Back to Earth), every single episode (as of Spring 2024) is directed by Doug Naylor.

S8 finishes with this uneven ep. It seems to exist mostly to get rid of the Red Dwarf crew and restore the show back to what it was before. There is an awesome as hell joke here about Kryten & Kochanski's period. pic.twitter.com/0AwYFYV2wd

The end has a microbe that is eating Red Dwarf itself, and the crew escapes, except for our guys who are left behind. They go into an alternate dimension to find a cure, and this is where it goes pear shaped. The end is pic.twitter.com/JEtj98QEPC

not good. There is a deleted scene on the DVD that plays MUCH better (ship is reset) than the actual finale, which has Rimmer kicking the Grim Reaper in the nuts. While the show didn't end here, it took 10 yrs to return. pic.twitter.com/WBrsq6ve35
