Turnabout Intruder

This Story: Season 3 Episode 24 (production code 3.24)
TOS Overall: Story 79, Episode 80
Trek Overall: Story 79, Episode 80
Airdate: 3 Jun 1969
Written by Arthur H. Singer & Gene Roddenberry
Directed by Herb Wallerstein

Notes

  • The final episode of the original Star Trek series to air.
  • This episode was supposed to air on 28 Mar 1969, but was pre-empted due to the death of former president Dwight D. Eisenhower.  Due to various other scheduling issues, it never aired until 3 Jun 1969.
  • When filming this episode, Shatner was extremely ill with a high fever, it somewhat shows in his performance, which I think actually benefitted him.
  • Nichelle Nichols did not appear, and the communications officer was played by Barbara Baldavin, who appeared in the first season episodes “Balance of Terror” & “Shore Leave“.
  • Leonard Nimoy & Majel Barrett were the only two actors to appear in this, the final episode as well as the original pilot, “The Cage“.
  • The 25th and unmade episode of the season which would have come after this entitled “The Joy Machine” was to be directed by William Shatner.
  • The final scene ever filmed for the original series was of William Shatner and Sandra Smith in front of the alien transference machine.
  • The Star Trek Continues folks created a vignette for the end of this episode which is worth watching.  I’ve embedded that on the page below:

TOS ends with this stinker - where a woman is jealous of Kirk's career so she does a forced mind swap and wants to take control of the Enterprise. The only real good parts of this are William Shatner pic.twitter.com/s57K7PfhnI

pretending to be a woman pretending to be Kirk. He was very ill at the time which helped his performance I think. Beyond that, a lame way to go out. There was to be more, but show canceled mid production. pic.twitter.com/snswqdbNvp

Thus ends TOS. Always loved this Trek, grew up with it. I also loved at the end of the ep, they had the Enterprise sailing off into the sunset in the remastered version.

Barbara Baldavian who stood in for Nichelle Nichols who was otherwise unavailable for filming. She also played the girl who was to be married in “Balance of Terror”.

The last shot of the remastered version in the episode – loved the sailing into the sunset vibe here.
