• The titular guest star in this episode is Paul Winfield who is very well known as Capt Terrell in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.
• Ashley Judd also appears in this episode as “Robin Lefler” – a character that would appear once more in the episode “The Game“.
• The first appearance of the “Type 6 shuttlecraft”.
• Doctor Who writer/producer Russell T Davies has said that this episode of TNG was the inspiration for the Doctor Who episode “Midnight“.
• Data’s quarters get a redesign here.  It is not stated whether this has anything to do with the events of the recent episode “In Theory“, but if one wanted to read into it, it would be super easy to see how that would be the case.
• Star Trek: Lower Decks shows that a Tamarian becomes part of Starfleet, and can converse in Federation standard (aka English).
