The City on the Edge of Forever
The City on the Edge of Forever
This Story: Season 1 Episode 28 (production code 1.28)
TOS Overall: Story 28, Episode 29
Trek Overall: Story 28, Episode 29
Airdate: 6 Apr 1967
Written by Harlan Ellison
Directed by Joseph Pevney
Notes
- This episode was heavily rewritten from the original, leading to a decade long feud between Harlan Ellison & Gene Roddenberry.
- The Guardian of Forever returns a few times after this. First in the animated series episode “Yesteryear” (1973), and much later in the Star Trek Discovery two part episode “Terra Firma” (2020).
- In the scene where McCoy accidentally injects himself in the stomach, the stunt person broke the set. As “McCoy” falls to the ground he hits the rail, and the broken rail can be clearly seen (and is wood). It’s fixed in the next shot, however. I have a screen capture of this below.

One of the top eps overall. McCoy accidentally OD's, goes crazy and escapes the ship going back in time and changing everything. Kirk & Spock have to go into the past to fix things. While there, pic.twitter.com/Nbcpvpic4t

falls in love with Edith Keeler (young Joan Collins). Spock finds out that to fix the timelines Edith must die. A supremely well executed ep, great acting by Shatner & Collins. Still works now. pic.twitter.com/fngaSZGHBT
