Star Trek: TNG Marathon

Star Trek: The Next Generation:

In 1986, it was announced that Star Trek was coming back to television.  It wasn’t Kirk, Spock, & McCoy – who were off in movies at this point.  It was a totally new crew.  Set roughly 85 years after the era of Kirk & Spock (according to press at the time), this was a new ship, and new Enterprise.   It was also created by Gene Roddenberry (as was the original).  When it was first announced I was both excited and unsure.  But I was a fan of the original, as well as the animated series, so a new incarnation with totally new characters and setup was something I wasn’t sure about.  But…  it was created by Gene Roddenberry himself, and it had (at least at the start) much of the same production people behind the scenes.  So that was good.

This was also the first incarnation of Trek on TV that I remembered myself fully.  Family legend has me in a playpen when the original series was on TV, and I do remember watching the 73/74 animated series, but I was only 8 at the time, so I don’t have a ton of recall of what I thought about it at the time.  When this came out I was 22, and was the target for this, so I remember it well.  I was there on 28 Sep 1987 when this launched, and watched every episode when it aired.  Something that has continued to this day with all the subsequent Star Trek variants.

But as I said elsewhere – TNG is to Star Trek what Patrick Troughton was to Doctor Who.  The first “replacement” – so if this didn’t go well, we wouldn’t have gotten any of the other incarnations that came after.  Fortunately, this did go well, and went on to run 179 episodes over seven seasons.

When I finished with the TNG series, the four movies, and the final season of Star Trek: Picard, I wrote an overall STTNG wrap-up before moving on to the next thing.  You can read that here.

Star Trek: Picard

After Nemesis aired in 2002, that was effectively the end of the Next Generation crew’s travels.  Nemesis wasn’t supposed to be the last movie, but due to the negative reception, it ended up being the last one.  However, much to most people’s surprise, 18 years later (in Aug of 2018), it was announced there was to be a new series.  Not with the next Gen crew, but with Patrick Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard, 20 years down the line.  Not a reboot, or a prequel, but a true honest SEQUEL (thank the heavens!).

Seasons 1 & 2 had several guest stars from the Next Generation era, but Season 3 was a full on TNG reunion.  It was a soft reboot for the series, as most of what gave “Star Trek Picard” its identity was cut loose after Season 2. Not ALL of it mind you, but most of it.  Season 3 was so much like TNG, that I’ve decided to cover it here – out of order.  I’ve always intended to cover all of Star Trek in my marathon, but Picard S3 was SO MUCH like TNG, it’s effectively “Season 8” of Star Trek: TNG.

My plan is to cover Picard S3 now, and when I eventually get around to where Picard S1 comes up in the proper order of things, I’ll cover those then (and move these posts to a proper Picard page).

Season 1

Season 1 had a bit of a rocky start.  There’s obviously some good stuff in the first series, but there was a lot of shaky ground, too.  It took some time for the show to find its footing – and it didn’t happen in this series.  As I start this marathon in Sep of 2024, I can’t tell you the last time I sat down to intentionally watch the first series of TNG like this.  It’s been awhile.

Also, Season 1 was plagued with behind the scenes instability – it’s a bit of a surprise the show survived its first year to be honest.  There was a movie made about all that by William Shatner, it’s called “Chaos on the Bridge” and can be viewed in full for free on Youtube Movies (as of 19 Sep 2024). Check it out – it’s a good watch.

Season 2

Season 2 had quite a bit of overhaul.  The show was popular, and behind the scenes instability led to a lot of changes on the show.  Not all of them behind the scenes.  The main cast had several changes.   The first one was that Gates McFadden (Dr. Crusher) was dropped from the cast.  It was explained on screen that she left to join Starfleet Medical, but the reality is the behind the scenes instability had someone push her out.  She was replaced for Season 2 with Diana Muldaur as “Dr. Katherine Pulaski”.  Dr. Pulaski came off as a female version of Dr. McCoy.  Same kind of sensibility.

Also, Whoopi Goldberg joined the cast as a semi-regular – the bartender “Guinan”.  She was (mostly) in a newly created lounge area called “Ten Forward” – a bar, basically.  While it would be easy to write Guinan off as a bartender, she was a lot more than just that.

The series also suffered from the ongoing writer’s strike – in fact the finale of Season 2 was the only “clip slow” in the show’s history due to writing problems at the time.  The Borg are introduced in this series as well.

Season 3

Season 3 had more behind the scenes changes (in writing and exec producer mostly) – although it pretty much stabilizes from here given the fiasco that went on behind the scenes in Seasons 1 & 2.  However one MAJOR change was in front of the camera.  With the departure of Maurice Hurley,  we had a change in the actor playing the Doctor.  Gates McFadden returned as Dr Crusher and Diana Muldaur was out.  This was due to Hurley, who was allegedly responsible for firing McFadden in the first place.  Dr Pulaski is never mentioned again – complete erasure of the character.

This season contains some of my all time favorite episodes of the Series (Yesterday’s Enterprise, Sins of the Father, & The Best of Both Worlds).  It also featured the return to Trek of Mark Lenard as Spock’s father Sarek.  We also got introduced to Tony Todd as Worf’s brother Kurn & Dwight Schultz as Reg Barkley.

The main titles had a small tweak after season 2 as well.  The show found its footing in this series for sure.

Season 4

Season 4 builds on what made Season 3 great and expands on it.  The show is the most stable it’s been since it started with Season 3 virtually being made by the same crew that Season 3 was.  Serialized storytelling is brought into the forefront a bit more with ongoing stories taking more of the overall plots of the season.  This series also sees the departure of Will Wheaton from the show as a series regular.

It is also the point where I believe the show surpassed the original – both in sheer number of episodes as well as overall quality.  The original series is legendary for what it was for the time, but it was surpassed by TNG during this time, IMO.

Season 5

Season 5 is the season where the show loses its founder, as Gene Roddenberry passed during the making of this series.

We gain a recurring character in Ensign Ro Laren, who I’m convinced is here because of Wil Wheaton having left the show.  It was also the season when original Trek met TNG in a major way with the appearance of Leonard Nimoy as Spock this series.

There was a minor tweak to the opening titles.  They’re nearly identical to what had been in place before, but the series logo got a graphical tweak with some “echoing” behind the words.

Season 6

Season 6 is the year when the show doubles the output (in series) of the original series, going 6 vs TOS’ 3.

The show crosses into its own past again when James Doohan (Scotty) makes an appearance in a big way.  The most excellent two parter when Picard is tortured by Cardassians happens here, the holodeck Moriarty returns, and the events of one episode this series become the major plot point of the entire final season of Star Trek Discovery.

The opening title change made for Season 5 was reverted, and the show logo lost the “echo” behind the text it had in Season 5, and would remain with the original logo it had from seasons 1-4 for seasons 6 & 7.

Season 7

Season 7 is the final year for Next Generation, as they intentionally ended the show here.

One minor change to the opening titles.  The prior seasons had the actor’s names in all capital letters.  The seventh series had the first letter of the actor’s first and surnames as capital letters. All the others were smaller but not traditional lower case lettering. They were upper case letters, just smaller.  You can see what I’m talking about here.

Movies

Right after Next Generation ended, production began on the seventh Star Trek movie – the first to feature the Next Generation crew.  Technically that work started before the TNG finale finished filming.  The cast had no break, as they went right into filming the movie after the series finale wrapped.   The first movie had a passing of the torch as you will with Kirk, Chekov, & Scotty from the original series appearing – although not together (with one exception) in the same movie.

There were four movies made with the Next Generation cast that were released in-between November of 1994 and December 2002.  At that point the movie franchise went on hiatus (with most of Star Trek) and didn’t return until 2009.  As I did with the movies of the original series, I wanted to include the Next Generation movies on this list too.

  • Star Trek: Generations (1994)
  • Star Trek: First Contact (1996)
  • Star Trek: Insurrection (1998)
  • Star Trek: Nemesis (2002)
