The Way of the Warrior
This Story: Season 4 Episodes 1 & 2 (production code 473)
DS9 Overall: Episodes 73 & 74 (see admin notes below)
Trek Overall: Story 335, Episodes 354 & 355
Airdate: 2 Oct 1995
Writer: Ira Steven Behr & Robert Hewitt Wolfe
Director: James L. Conway
Notes
- The first episode with Sisko’s new “bald” look which remains through the rest of the series.
- The first episode with an updated title sequence and theme. Both are mostly the same, just changed slightly.
- The first episode where the former “Siddig El Fahil” is now named as “Alexander Siddig”.
- The first episodes on DS9 for both Michael Dorn as Worf and JG Hertzler as Martok, although Hertzler has appeared in the show as other characters both prior to and after this. It is also the first episode with Worf’s mek’leth weapon.
- Patricia Tallman appears as “Weapons officer”. I know her well from Babylon 5, and she was a frequent stunt woman in Star Trek.
- The Khitomer accords as established in Star Trek VI as brokering peace with the Klingons & the Federation are abandoned b y the Klingons after this episode.
- Some of the ships in the battle sequences were real world props/toys: Playmates toys, Ertl model kits, & Hallmark Christmas ornaments.
- The first episode where Deep Space Nine has its upgraded weapons array.
- While not intended to be a Part II to the last season finale, it definitely follows up on the events of that episode.
- This episode appears to contradict the rules established in “The Search Part I” saying that the Defiant can’t use the cloaking device in the Alpha Quadrant.
- The first of three episodes that were feature length that were not also either series pilots or finales. The other two are both Voyager episodes – “Flesh and Blood” & “Dark Frontier“.
- There are numerous episodes of TNG referenced – a complete list can be found on the Memory Alpha link below.
- The episode carries a dedication to Gregg Duffy Long & Ronald W. Smith.
- ADMIN NOTE: As originally produced and broadcast, this was one double length episode (and as such counts as Episode 1 of the series). Once the show went into repeat syndication, it was broadcast in two parts. I am watching and processing it as the original one episode, but will count it as two in the episode counts to be in line with the official designation – but still honoring the original one episode broadcast. It’s confusing. :) Some scenes were cut when it was edited into two parts – details on that are in the Memory Alpha link below.
