The Menagerie

This Story: Season 1 Episodes 11 & 12 (production code 1.16)
TOS Overall: Story 12, Episodes 12-13
Trek Overall: Story 12, Episodes 12-13
Airdate: 17 – 24 Nov 1966
Written by Gene Roddenberry
Directed by Marc Daniels (Pt 1) & Robert Butler (Pt 2)

Notes

  • This is the only two part episode in the entire original Star Trek series.
  • Robert Butler was the director of “The Cage“. He was asked to return to direct the new segments, but declined. He was credited as director of Part 2 as the majority of that part is Cage footage.
  • Jeffrey Hunter was unable to reprise his role as Christopher Pike, and was replaced by Sean Kenney, who was made up to look disfigured.  Kenney also played the Enterprise crewman “DePaul” in two episodes – “Arena” & “A Taste of Armageddon“.
  • Malachi Throne played Commodore Mendez.  He also was the voice of the main Talosian in the original Cage footage.  To that, the voice of the Talosians was pitch shifted in post production so they and Mendez didn’t sound the same.  He later appeared in the Next Generation two parter “Unification I & II” as a Romulan Senator (Pardek).
  • This is the first time we see a shuttlecraft on screen.  The original special effects had it as the Galileo (as all the shuttles were since they had just the one), but the updated effects show it to be a shuttlecraft from the starbase, not the Enterprise.

They re-use the OG pilot footage in a two parter. Spock steals the Enterprise & a disfigured Pike to go to Talos IV - the planet from the Cage. Most of Part 1 is about "WTF is with Spock?" and setup for the pic.twitter.com/EfcFFwn6FC

trial in Pt 2. This was an excellent use of the pilot footage, but most of that was in Pt 2. As much as this is focused on Pike, it's an excellent Spock episode. Modern Trek still uses the chair for Pike ❤️ pic.twitter.com/m6Eg5YY8Ib

The only Pt2 in TOS concludes with more of the trial of Spock, using footage from the pilot (The Cage) as "evidence". Canonically, Pike is left on Talos IV to live out his years with the illusion of his pic.twitter.com/RykOsdNjcV

health. Kirk & Enterprise are exonerated with help of the Talosians. The bulk of this is just watching "The Cage", there's not nearly as much drama original to Part 2 as there was in pt 1. Still, was good. pic.twitter.com/dvXbMe83rU
