Where Silence Has Lease
Where Silence Has Lease
This Story: Season 2 Episode 2 (production code 128)
TNG Overall: Episode 28
Trek Overall: Story 128, Episode 130
Airdate: 28 Nov 1988
Written by Jack B. Sowards
Directed by Winrich Kolbe
Notes
- The first Star Trek episode directed by Winrich Kolbe. He went on to direct numerous episodes across the rest of the franchise, including the TNG finale, “All Good Things….” and the pilot of Voyager, “Caretaker“.
- O’Brien (still not named on screen) is referred to here as Lieutenant. This contracts all canon later on where he is an enlisted man, and not a commissioned officer.
- This episode marks the first appearance of the new red alert lights which entirely flash on and off and they will be used for the rest of the show’s run.
- One of the pages I read for this episode said the following, but I don’t hear it myself: “There are hints of the classic Star Trek “Fight Music” (see TOS: “Amok Time“) in the holodeck scene with Riker and Worf.”
- This is the 28th episode of TNG, and already the second one where they set auto destruct.

A lot of this ep takes place on the bridge - far more than in most eps. The crew investigate a "hole in space" (Immunity Syndrome?). For most of it they're just stuck in place dealing with fantasy pic.twitter.com/hinfN5vTGx

scenarios. In the end it's a life form who is curious about us. The ending was a bit eh, but the path to get there was actually interesting - loved the excessive use of same sets. Good direction. pic.twitter.com/u41PySZpqW
