TNG Overall: Episode 123
Trek Overall: Story 220, Episode 225
Airdate: 11 May 1992
Written by René Echevarria
Directed by Robert Lederman
Notes
- Jonathan Del Arco originates the character of “Hugh” here. The character would later return in Descent Part II, as well as three episodes of Series 1 of Star Trek: Picard.
- Del Arco was one of the actors up for Wesley Crusher originally.
- This the first of two episodes directed by Robert Lederman (the other was “Force of Nature“). He wrote two episodes of Deep Space Nine, one of Voyager, but he’s most known for being an editor. In that capacity he worked on 33 episodes of TNG, 17 of DS9, 44 of VOY, & 34 of ENT.
- The concept of Borg “names” is established here. Hugh’s Borg name is “Three of Five” – this concept was expanded on with Seven’s full Borg name on Voyager as “Seven of Nine – Tertiary adjunct of Unimatrix Zero One”
- The resolution of “Hugh” in this episode is brought up as a talking point in Descent Part I.

#StarTrekMarathon #StarTrek TNG Ep 123 - I, Borg - 11 May 1992 2/2 good stuff with putting Picard & Guinan in moral conflict - even prejudice. The individual Borg is given a name - "Hugh". Always loved this story. Hugh returns later in 2 eps of TNG & 3 of Picard. Very well done ep - a high point.
