Notes

  • The first time humans, Klingons, Romulans, & Cardassians appear in the same episode.
  • The main plot of this episode becomes the underlying story of the fifth and final season of Star Trek: Discovery when various factions are seeking the same technology mentioned/referenced in this episode.
  • This story is supposedly inspired  by the real life novel “Contact” by Carl Sagan.  That book was later turned into a movie with Jodie Foster.
  • Ron Moore said that the ancient humanoids in this story were thought of to be the Preservers from the TOS episode “The Paradise Syndrome“, but that was not explicitly stated in the episode.
  • There was a scene filmed with Mr. Mot the barber, but was cut (and is available as a deleted scene on the Blu-Ray set).
  • The Progenitor seen on a video monitor was played by Salome Jens who went on to a fairly large recurring role on Deep Space Nine as the main female changeling in charge of the war.
  • The Kurlan naiskos item that Picard is given was shown again in Star Trek: Generations after the Enterprise had crashed landed.  It was shown again in the Star Trek Picard episodes “Remembrance” and “The Star Gazer“.
  • The first time one of DS9’s sister stations is mentioned – “Deep Space Four”.
