Broken Bow

This Story: Season 1 Episodes 1 & 2 (production codes 101 & 102)
ENT Overall: Episodes 1 & 2
Trek Overall: Story 593, Episodes 628 & 629
Airdate: 26 Sep 2001
Written by Rick Berman & Brannon Braga
Directed by James Conway

Notes

  • The first episode of the series.  As originally broadcast, this was shown as one, but since then it’s been distributed as a two parter.
  • This episode was novelized by Diane Carey.  It is still available on Amazon.com.
  • The first episode of Enterprise directed by James Conway.  In all he would direct four episodes of Enterprise, as well as 4 of Voyager, 7 of DS9, and 3 of TNG.
  • The script was written before anyone was cast.
  • The start of the ongoing storyline on Enterprise about a “Temporal Cold War”.  It wouldn’t finish until the second episode of the fourth season.
  • Allegedly several of the guest characters are named after original series characters.
  • Sato’s place of work (Amazon University) has nothing to do with the real world Amazon.com.
  • The door of the Klingon Chambers was re-used as the door to a Vulcan sanctuary in the episode “The Andorian Incident“.
  • Excluding time travel episodes of other series, this is the earliest set episode of any incarnation of Star Trek (through Jun 2026).
  • The starship model that young Archer has appears again in the episode “Similitude“.
  • Doctor Phlox’s race is a new invention to Star Trek here (the Denobulans), although their name wouldn’t be revealed quite yet.
  • This episode depicts the first contact between Humans and Klingons.
  • This episode won an Emmy Award for “Outstanding Special Visual Effects for a Series”.
  • The first of QUITE a few appearances of Vaughn Armstrong as Admiral Forrest.
  • James Cromwell reprises his role of Zefram Cochrane here, although at his request, he’s uncredited.
  • USS Enterprise NX-01 has a view screen on the bridge that looks like an “early version” of the same sensor Spock had on his panel on the Original Series.
  • John Fleck plays the recurring role of Silik here.  He was also Talibak in TNG’s “The Mind’s Eye“, an unnamed Cardassian in DS9’s “The Homecoming“, Ornithar in DS9’s “The Search“, the Romulan Koval in DS9’s “Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges“, & Abandon in Voyager’s “Alice“.
  • Mark Moses plays Archer’s father Henry.  He was laos Naroq in the Voyager episode “Riddles“.
  • Gary Graham plays the recurring role of Soval here.  He was also Tanis in Voyager’s “Cold Fire“.
  • Thomas Kopache plays the Vulcan Tos here.  He was also the Romulan Mirok in TNG’s “The Next Phase“, a train engineer in TNG’s “Emergence“, Viorsa in Voyager’s “The Thaw“, Kira Taban (Kira’s father) in DS9’s “Ties of Blood and Water” & “Wrongs Darker than Death or Night“, as well as a Sphere Builder subject in Enterprise’s “Harbinger“.  He was also the communications offer on Enterprise-B in Star Trek: Generations.
  • James Horan played the never seen shadow character in the background talking to Archer in half a dozen or so Enterprise episodes.  He was also Jo’Brill in TNG’s “Suspicions“, Barnaby in TNG’s “Descent, Part II“, Tosin in Voyager’s “Fair Trade“, and the Jem’Hadar Tkat’ika in DS9’s “In Purgatory’s Shadow” & “By Inferno’s Light“.
  • The Suliban Doctor was played by Joseph Ruskin.  He was Galt in the TOS episode “The Gamesters of Triskelion“, a Cardassian informant in DS9’s “Improbable Cause“, the Klingon Tumek in DS9’s “The House of Quark” & “Looking for par’Mach in all the Wrong Places“, a Vulcan master in Voyager’s “Gravity“, and a Son’a officer in Star Trek Insurrection.
  • The two butterfly dancers in this episode were sisters in real life – Diane & Elaine Klimaszewski.
  • Connie Bosmans played a non speaking background Vulcan woman.  She reprised the same character again in the episode “Shockwave, Part II” – again no lines (and uncredited both times).

#StarTrekMarathon #StarTrek Enterprise Episodes 1 & 2 - Broken Bow - 26 Sep 2001 3/3 Enterprise crew, the show setup, plus of course some adventure and what happened with the Vulcans after Cochrane's meeting in First Contact. Plus we have a dog on the ship, which I thought was fun! Great start.
